Roulette Game Rules: Betting Rules & Types, Basic Roulette Lessons

Your basic roulette lessons begin with learning the betting rules, or the types of outcomes on which you can bet at a roulette game, and the roulette game rules for placing these different bets on the roulette table.

The two basic roulette betting types are Inside Bets and Outside Bets. These bets rely upon the numbers' placements on the roulette table layout. Learn about a third type, Called Bets or Call Bets, and the casino payouts of each bet on Roulette Casino Tutorials.

Inside bets are those placed on a particular number, or on a range of numbers based on their position, such as within or along the border of the numerical roulette table layout.

Straight. A bet on a single number, the simplest type of roulette bet. To place a straight bet, set the chip down on the middle of any number square at the roulette table.

Split. A bet on two numbers that lie beside one another, either vertically or horizontally, on the roulette wheel diagram. To make a split bet, place a chip on the line between the two numbers.

Street. A bet on three adjoining numbers on a (horizontal) row. To place a street bet, put a chip on the outside line of the number at the end of the row. For example, to wager on 1- 2-3 all at once, put a chip on the number 3 line.

Corner or Square. A bet on four adjoining numbers forming a square layout, such as 8-9-11-12. To place a corner bet or square bet, position a chip at the intersection of the lines where the four numbers meet.

Sixline or Sixaine. A bet on six numbers forming two adjoining streets bets, as above. To place a sixline bet or sixaine bet, put a chip on the intersection where the two street bets meet.

Outside bets are those placed on a particular grouping of numbers other than their numerical layout, such as colors or values.

Red/Black. A simple bet on all 18 numbers either on the red pocket or black pocket. To place a red bet or black bet, set a chip down on the area marked 'red' or 'black', found on the front of the roulette table layout.

Odd/Even. A simple bet on either of all 18 odd numbers or 18 even numbers. Note that zero is neither odd nor even. To make an odd bet or even bet, place a chip on the area marked 'odd' or 'even', found on either side of the red/black betting areas.

Low/High. A bet on the low 18 or high 18 range of numbers, either from 1 to 18 or from 19 to 36. To place a low bet or high bet, put a chip on the area marked '1-18' or '19-36', found on either side of the odd/even betting areas.

Group. A bet on all 12 numbers on any of three divisions on the table diagram, such as 1-2-3 right-down to 12. To place a group bet, set a chip down on the square beside the last of the 12 numbers.

Column. A bet on all 12 numbers on any of three (vertical) columns on the table layout, such as 1-4-7-10 down to 34. To place a column bet, position a chip on the square below the last of the 12 numbers.

Dozen. A bet on all 12 numbers on any of the three dozen-set of numbers out of 36, the first dozen being 1 to 12, the second dozen 13 to 24, the third dozen 25 to 36. To make a dozen bet, place a chip on the area marked '1st 12' or '2nd 12' or '3rd 12'.
